Minichamps and Co.
Despite the bad state of the world economy, Minichamps seems to be doing well. Their choice in making models in 1: 64 was a strategic one . I discussed this with Paul Lang and his staff at the International Toy Fair at Nuremburg last february. Their aim with this new line is to reach younger collectors. We talked about ways to use new media to bring these models to their attention. These kids use the internet fully. I did not see any activity in this field until now. The pricing of these 1:64 models could be another obstacle. Of course, the quality is immaculate, but a price of around € 10,– could be a little bit stiff for pocket money.
Minichamps will be representing Mondo Motors for the German market. One wonders wether they will have a say in the choice of models Mondo Motors will develop in the future. In the meantime Minichamps made special models for Mercedes, Volkswagen and Porsche for sale at the IAA held at Frankfurt. Nice are the Sirling Moss and the new Merceds with the doors like the 300 SL (Flugelture). These special models are all sold out and will be available in 2010 in the regular Minichamps series. Minichamps also disclosed that their will be a model of the new Bentley Mulsanne recently introduced at Monterey.
